Office Standards

Office standards include the size of the office, use (e.g., shared vs private) and occupants of spaces. There are several types of spaces:

• Private — Office space assigned exclusively to a single employee.
• Shared — Shared office area where multiple employees have assigned, dedicated work spaces.
• Flexible — Office space that is not assigned to a specific employee and is available for use by anyone within a particular department (or any KU employee, in some cases). These spaces are often known as “hoteling spaces.” In shared, unassigned space, employees have a desk to use when on campus, but the desk can also used by others when available.

Office spaces are determined by an employee’s job title, their position FTE designation and the amount of time spent working on campus. For employees who perform 100% of their work on campus, the type of office space is determined by their job title and FTE.  Employees with an FTE of 0.75 or less or who work fewer than 24 hours per week on campus should have shared office space.

Office standards for each job title are in the table below. Space for faculty and staff who hold multiple job titles will generally be allocated based on the higher designation (e.g., Chair & Associate Professor allocated space is 150 NASF rather than 130 NASF.)
