Three-Year Project Will Renovate Lindley Hall

Changes are in store for Lindley Hall that are both exciting and challenging. Important work to repair and modernize Lindley, which has been under consideration for some time, is finally moving forward. These plans include repairs to the foundation, improvements to classrooms, labs and office space and significant improvements to the heating and cooling systems.

Many of Lindley’s building systems are at end-of-life, which has accelerated the proposed timeline for starting the project. The age, condition, overall infrastructure and the amount of work that needs to be done require urgency to ensure Lindley is both functional and modern for decades to come. The broad scope of this work means the building must be vacated during most of the renovation.

Fall 2023 courses originally scheduled to be taught in Lindley have been moved to other campus buildings. This is the first step as KU begins to address the teaching, research, working and learning needs of those who use this space regularly and who have come to rely on it. The KU Operations project team is meeting with individuals within affected departments to ensure space and function needs, as well as co-location needs, are considered as offices and labs are reassigned to nearby areas of campus, and teaching lab spaces are upgraded. Space Management, Facilities, Planning & Development and department representatives with space in Lindley are beginning to develop a more comprehensive timeline to give faculty, staff, researchers and students a better understanding of the impact of this long-term improvement project. The project team is also working to ensure all logistical and administrative considerations are addressed and supported as offices, classrooms and labs transition to new locations.

Perhaps more important, the project team wants and needs input from affected stakeholders. The team is reaching out to faculty, researchers and staff, in particular, to get a better sense of their needs prior to, during and after the renovation. Faculty, researcher and staff concerns and ideas can keep Facilities, Planning and Development, Facilities Services and Space Management teams, as well as our contracted service providers, informed so they can better serve stakeholders and address individual needs. Those who teach, work and conduct research in Lindley will be able to return to the building once renovation, upgrades and repairs are complete.

Lindley Hall is an iconic building on our campus with an envious location. All involved in the project are working to ensure it is a structure that is also comfortable, safe and consistent with modern-day standards. Once renovated, Lindley Hall, will serve faculty, staff, researchers and students far into the future.
